A Walk In My Shoes...
Walk with me...
Entry for November 30, 2008 Hunting with a Croquet Mallet
photo
I am having one of the toughest hunting seasons for whitetail deer that I can remember. During the archery season I saw a ton of bucks...but let them go because they were too small to shoot or too far away to reach with an arrow. Now it is rifle season and in theory I should be able to shoot anything that I can actually see...the problem though...is that I have not seen bucks during the rifle season...unless you want to count the large buck I saw this weekend on my neighbor's lawn...licking birdseed out of the their bird feeder. I swear he bobbed his head and chuckled at me as I drove by slowly admiring his rack of antlers. I really want to put some venison in my freezer so I have decided over the past few days to shoot a doe...and I have tried...and missed a few times. That really perplexes me...because my rifle is usually dead on (pun intended). My cure for this poor shooting performance is to take a croquet mallet in the woods with me now...to use as a support to steady the rifle (I could go out and buy a set of shooting sticks...the proper tool for the job...but I am hoping someone buys those for me for Christmas). The mallet serves two purposes, in addition to supporting the rifle...I can use it to beat myself over the head if I shoot at another deer this season and MISS!!!
