Entry for February 22, 2009 A day in St. Maarten

We eventually had to end our vacation in Nevis and head home...which required us to spend about 6 hours on layover in St. Maarten. We left the airport and headed to the beach to have some lunch, soak up a little more sun...and do the best we could to enjoy the last few hours of warm weather. We ended up at a joint at the end of runway...it was fun to sit there and watch the planes come in and land without incident. A crash may have been more exciting...but not something you ever want to really see...especially right before you are about to get on a plane. We finally had to leave and fly home...which is its own short story. The plane was a little too heavy...so they had to count the number of children on board to check the weight (children weigh less than adults)...and then instead of taking off into the wind...we had to take off with the wind to get enough speed to get in the air...not something you really want to do. We made it. But the extra weight caused us to burn a lot of fuel...so when we reached the States...and traffic was backed up around the Philly airrport...we had to land in Atlantic City and get more fuel. We then headed into Philly, just in time to miss our connection to Syracuse. So we spent the night (about 4 hours of it) in a suite at a Sheraton Hotel...paid for by US Air...and got home late morning of the 23rd. Back to snow.
