Entry for April 12, 2009 Food and Wine in Lake Placid

No trip with me would be complete without some discussion of the food and wine that we had. Our first meal on the way to the mountains was at the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake...always a favorite stop of ours...for a quick bite to eat in the lounge just off the bar. You sit and look out over the lake and the airport hub of the few sea planes that take tourists up for a bird's eye view of the area. The menu is extensive and full of good 'ol comfort food...just what you need to break up the drive to Lake Placid. Breakfast was included in our room rate at the Mirror Lake Inn...so we started our days in their restaurant. The granola parfait was a big hit...as were the pancakes (the granola encrusted french toast wasn't bad either). Lunch on our first day was at the Noonmark Diner in Keene Valley...everthing you expect from a diner in the middle of nowhere...plus...they make their own 7 grain bread fresh every day. I chose a roast beast sandwich with mayo and horseradish...perfect. Our first night's meal was at Milano North...probably our best meal of the trip...a super Italian restaurant that makes thin crust pizza to die for. We paired our pizzas with an extraordinary bottle of 1999 Italian wine pictured above. The next day we had lunch at the Brown Dog in Lake Placid...where you order deli style and then muscle your way to a table overlooking the lake (and if you are lucky...you get the corner table that looks out to Whiteface mountain). I had a nice tart and salad...and the group managed to wash down the food with two bottles of Kistler chardonnay (we felt we could indulge a little since we had managed to get the entire clan up and down Mt. Jo earlier that day). For dinner we sent the kids across the street on their own to the cottage. They felt pretty proud of themselves for managing to order, eat and then charge the bill to our room. The adults stayed at the Inn and ate in the bar...a light meal since we had such an indulgent lunch. The little bistro at the Mirror Lake Inn bar is really nice. We met two other couples from Cazenovia while we were sitting there...small world. So...there is more than just great views in Lake Placid...there is great dining as well...and it is always better when you are sharing the experience with friends.
